If you need to cool one room, there are three common refrigerated air-conditioning options worth considering: a portable unit, a window/wall unit or a split system.
All can cool a room, but they solve the installation problem in very different ways.

These are general differences rather than guarantees for every model or installation.
Portable air conditioners
A portable refrigerated air conditioner places the compressor, fan and refrigeration equipment inside a freestanding cabinet. Hot air is usually expelled through a flexible exhaust hose connected to a window kit.
Advantages
Portable units can be useful when you rent, permanent installation is not permitted, cooling is temporary or only one small room needs occasional cooling. They also avoid the upfront installation work required for a split system.
Drawbacks
Most of the machinery remains inside the room. That can mean more indoor noise than a split system, while single-hose portable systems are generally less efficient because they exhaust conditioned room air and can draw warmer replacement air back inside.
They also need a compatible window and exhaust kit. “Portable” does not always mean easy to move: many units are heavy, and changing rooms can mean relocating the hose, window kit and drainage arrangement.

Window/wall air conditioners
Window/wall air conditioners are self-contained units installed through a window or purpose-made external wall opening. The front remains inside while the hot side projects outdoors.
Advantages
A window/wall system avoids the portable unit’s flexible exhaust hose. With the hot side outside, a correctly installed model can offer better efficiency and sustained cooling than a typical single-hose portable unit.
It can be particularly practical when an older home already has a suitable wall opening. Adapting that opening may be simpler than creating an entirely new installation elsewhere.
Drawbacks
The installation still needs a suitable opening, secure support, weather sealing and appropriate electrical supply.
A window installation can affect security, sealing, natural light and normal use of the window. A wall installation may require structural work and is not generally suitable as a casual DIY modification.
Noise can also be more noticeable than with a split system because the compressor remains physically connected to the appliance mounted in the room opening.
Split-system air conditioners
A split system separates the indoor and outdoor components. The indoor head distributes conditioned air, while the compressor and much of the noisy refrigeration equipment sit outside.
Advantages
For regular long-term cooling, a correctly sized non-ducted split system is generally the strongest of these three options for efficiency, performance and indoor comfort.
Split systems can also provide reverse-cycle heating. Because the compressor is outside, indoor noise is usually lower than with an all-in-one portable unit.
Drawbacks
A split system requires permanent professional installation, suitable indoor and outdoor positions, refrigerant pipework, condensate drainage and appropriate electrical work.

For many renters, the available choices depend on what the property owner allows.
A portable refrigerated unit is usually the least permanent option, although it still needs a compatible window and safe exhaust setup. A window/wall unit generally changes the building or window arrangement. A split system is permanent and normally requires owner approval and professional installation.
Check the conditions that apply to the property before buying equipment.
What if there is already an old wall air conditioner?
Do not automatically assume the opening must be removed and replaced with a split system.
An existing opening can make a replacement window/wall unit worth investigating. Measure it carefully and have the condition, support and sealing assessed. A newer unit may not match the old dimensions, so modifications may still be required.

Which is likely to be quietest?
For bedrooms and other noise-sensitive spaces, split systems generally have an advantage because the compressor is outside.
Portable units keep it inside the room, while window/wall units place it within the appliance mounted through the opening. Noise still varies significantly between models, so check published indoor and outdoor figures rather than relying on terms such as quiet or sleep mode.
Which is likely to be most efficient?
Australian Government guidance identifies non-ducted split systems as a highly efficient option, while CHOICE testing and comparison guidance finds single-hose portable units less efficient than comparable fixed systems.
Correctly installed window/wall units can be reasonably efficient but generally do not match split-system efficiency. Results still depend on the model, capacity, climate and quality of the installation.
