LG Fit & Max fridge: a closer fit, in four finishes

Our first look at LG’s 436L Fit & Max fridge: zero clearance hinges, dedicated door cooling, four finishes, installation gaps and Australian buying advice.

The gap beside a fridge can make a surprising difference to a kitchen. Too much empty space looks unfinished; too little can leave a door catching the wall. LG’s 436-litre Fit & Max bottom mount range tackles that problem with hinges designed to work close to the surrounding cupboards.

We have seen this fridge hands-on. Two features stood out: the zero clearance hinges and the dedicated cooling outlet for the door area. This first look explains those features, the four finishes and the installation details worth checking before ordering. We have not measured cooling speed, noise or energy use, or assessed long-term reliability.

A small side gap with a practical purpose

LG calls the design Zero Clearance Hinges. The aim is to let the door open beside nearby cabinetry without needing the wide side gap some conventional hinges require. Slim doors and a front vent/exhaust help the appliance sit closer to the surrounding joinery.

The clearances confirmed in our hands-on notes are 4 mm on each side and 9 mm above. LG’s Australian product page also publishes the 4 mm side recommendation. Adding those gaps to the 697 mm width and 1740 mm height gives a nominal opening of 705 mm wide by 1749 mm high. Measure the narrowest part of your opening and allow for uneven cupboards, skirting and installation tolerances.

A close fit at the sides does not guarantee the doors will line up with your benchtop. Depth, the rear gap and the position of nearby handles still determine the finished result. Nor does a hinge remove the space the open door needs in front of the fridge.

The installation details to check

The owner’s manual linked from LG’s GB-B400MW support page specifies more than 50 mm behind the appliance. Keep that rear space in the plan, even though the side gaps are small.

Published dimensions and planning allowances
MeasurementWhat to allow for
Fridge size, W × H × D697 × 1740 × 696 mm
Side gaps4 mm each side, recommended by LG
Rear gapMore than 50 mm in the linked manual
Top gap9 mm
Nominal opening, W × H705 × 1749 mm, calculated from the gaps above
Packed size, W × H × D739 × 1812 × 772 mm

Keep the front vent/exhaust unobstructed. Before cabinetry is made, have the installer confirm the complete arrangement for your exact model.

The doors are reversible. LG’s manual says reversal must be carried out by qualified LG Electronics personnel, so arrange the opening direction and any charge before delivery. Choose the direction that gives you a clear route between the fridge and the bench where you unpack groceries.

Check the delivery route as well as the kitchen opening. The packed dimensions matter at narrow doors and stair turns. Our fridge measuring guide includes a worksheet for the opening, access and delivery measurements.

Cooling for the food in the door

The second feature that caught our attention was DoorCooling+: a dedicated outlet near the top front of the fridge, aimed at the door area. It addresses a practical concern for anyone who regularly reaches for drinks or condiments stored there.

LG says door cooling starts 15 seconds after the doors close. That is the start of the airflow, not a promise that a warm bottle will be cold in 15 seconds. We have not timed temperature recovery or compared it with another fridge.

For everyday use, keep the outlet clear when loading taller items. The presence of a cooling feature is less useful if groceries block the airflow or the door is left open while you reorganise the shelves.

Four finishes, and where to find them

The range comes in Matte White (GB-B400MW), Stainless (GB-B400PS), Black (GB-B400BS) and Matte Black (GB-B400MB). The Good Guys describes the Black version as Black Steel. Check the full model code when comparing prices, particularly between the two dark finishes.

All four share the published 436-litre capacity, dimensions and 5.5-star energy rating. Choose the finish against your actual cupboard and benchtop colours: a screen cannot show precisely how a surface will look in your kitchen light.

What the storage layout offers

Capacity is split into 308 litres for fresh food and 128 litres for frozen food. The bottom mount arrangement keeps the fridge above the freezer, which may suit a household that reaches for fresh ingredients more often than frozen meals.

LG lists three fridge shelves, four door baskets, a vegetable drawer and three transparent freezer drawers. Before buying, think about the awkward items in your own shop: a large food container, tall drink bottles, a whole cauliflower or a wide frozen pizza. A litre figure cannot tell you whether those will fit conveniently.

The Australian specifications list no folding shelf, wine rack or Fresh Converter drawer for this range, even though some shared gallery illustrations show extra storage features. Check the exact display unit rather than assuming every pictured accessory is included.

There is a normal ice tray, but no automatic ice maker or water dispenser. That leaves the buying decision centred on food storage and kitchen fit. If chilled water or automatic ice is a priority, compare a model designed to provide it.

Energy use and connected features

LG publishes 5.5 stars and 261 kWh per year for these models. At an illustrative electricity usage rate of 30 cents per kWh, that works out to about $78 a year; at 40 cents, about $104. These are calculations from the rated consumption, not measurements from our use. Room temperature, settings and door opening affect actual consumption.

ThinQ Wi-Fi connectivity allows compatible phones to adjust settings and access diagnostic functions. Express Cool, Express Freeze and a door alarm are also listed. The app requires a compatible phone, Wi-Fi and registration; it is worth considering whether you would use those functions beyond the initial setup.

LG currently lists security updates until 31 December 2031. That support date matters if connectivity is part of the attraction, and is separate from the physical lifespan of the appliance.

Warranty and the delivery quote

LG’s Australian warranty information provides two years of product parts and labour cover. The advertised ten-year compressor cover is parts-only after the initial product warranty: the published structure adds three years of sealed-system parts cover, then five further years for the compressor part. It does not promise ten years of labour-free repairs. Australian Consumer Law rights also apply.

Before paying, get a total delivered price that includes the services you need: positioning, packaging removal, taking away the old fridge and any door reversal. Confirm whether a delivery crew will negotiate stairs or tight turns, rather than assuming a standard delivery includes them.

Who this range is worth a look for

The Fit & Max range is worth inspecting if you want a bottom mount fridge, a choice of finishes and less wasted space at the sides. The hinge design is especially relevant where the fridge sits beside a wall or tall cupboard, provided the full installation and opening measurements work.

It will be less suitable if you need a much larger freezer, automatic ice or a water dispenser. Long-term owner evidence is still limited: the exact Matte White listing we checked on ProductReview.com.au had no owner reviews, and The Good Guys showed no reviews for these listings. Our first look supports a closer inspection of the fit and features, rather than a reliability verdict.

For a larger French door alternative, see our Fisher & Paykel Precision Fit preview. Its capacity, water features and installation requirements are different, so compare the actual opening and storage layout before comparing the styling.
