Compare product fit and check retailer availability
Fridge capacity is measured in litres, but litres do not tell you whether the appliance will fit the kitchen. Width, total depth, door swing, ventilation and the delivery route can rule out a model before its internal layout matters.
Start with the finished opening and the path into the house. Then compare it with the exact manufacturer's planning and installation documents. Fridges with similar capacities can have noticeably different external dimensions.
These widths are not fit guarantees. Check height, depth, ventilation and door swing too. See the full size chart or measure your opening first. For a 700mm-wide opening, only the smaller Westinghouse passes the width calculation.

Fridge size chart: body dimensions are not cavity sizes
There is no single standard fridge size in Australia. These four researched options show why body width alone cannot confirm fit. Measurements below are width × height × depth.

Those final figures check width only. All four still need rear and overhead ventilation, levelling and door access; a nearby wall may need much more room. Read the narrow Westinghouse notes, LG fit notes, Westinghouse installation notes or Haier planning notes before ordering.
Working in centimetres? Multiply by 10 to get millimetres: a 70cm opening is 700mm. A “60cm fridge” or “900mm opening” is only a starting description, not confirmation that an exact model fits.

A narrower fridge for a smaller household
The WTM3100WL-X gives up capacity to fit a narrower space. Westinghouse’s installation drawing linked from the exact model page specifies 30mm each side, 90mm above and 50mm behind. The doors project beyond cabinetry; the 658mm width calculation is only one part of the fit check.
Beside a corner wall? The drawing requires 350mm on the hinge side so shelves can be removed, and shows 1,199mm depth with the door open 90°. Confirm the hinge direction before paying; reversal needs an optional kit. This is not a flush-fitting fridge or a large-freezer alternative. The Australian model page lists a two-year domestic warranty.
Choosing a fridge for a tight opening?
If side clearance is the limiting measurement and a 436L bottom mount suits your household, our LG Fit & Max guide compares four finishes, fit limitations and retailer options. They share the same external dimensions; choosing a different finish will not solve a fit problem.
The stainless GB-B400PS measures 697mm wide × 1,740mm high × 696mm deep. LG recommends 4mm at each side, so a 700mm-wide opening is too narrow: the body plus those two gaps totals 705mm. That calculation is a width check, not a complete cavity specification.
The installation manual also requires more than 50mm behind the fridge. Check overhead space, levelling, doors, drawers and the power connection before ordering. A small side gap does not mean the fridge can sit against the rear wall.

Prefer the freezer on top?
The Westinghouse WTM4302WD-R offers a different storage layout: 329L of fresh-food space below a 102L freezer. The LG above has 308L of fresh-food space and a 128L freezer. Choose around your grocery habits and comfortable shelf reach; the Westinghouse has more fridge space, but less freezer space.
Its body measures 699mm wide × 1,725mm high × 723mm deep. Westinghouse's drawing specifies 30mm each side, 50mm behind and 90mm above in that arrangement. That is at least 759mm across the body and side gaps, before any extra door-access allowance. It is not a substitute for the LG in a tight opening.
This is the white, right-hinge version. In the corner arrangement shown by Westinghouse, allow 430mm on the hinge side so shelves can be removed. Check the installation drawings and cupboard airflow notes below; do not assume the doors can sit flush with the cabinets or that this exact version is reversible.
A narrower French-door option still needs side space
The Haier HRF510FHS has a 790mm body, but its model-specific planning sheet shows an 850mm-wide cavity. The user guide, page 33, specifies 30mm at each side for this French-door family and 50mm above and behind. Do not copy the 50mm side requirement from the bottom-mount diagram beside it. Check the supplied instructions, both door arcs and drawer access before ordering.
Its refillable water tank avoids a water connection, but needs refilling and cleaning. The 372L fridge and 137L freezer prioritise fresh food. Owners mention convenient storage alongside frequent refilling and awkward ice-tray access, so compare those jobs with your weekly routine.
Compare the delivered fridge cost
Use the full model code and finish when comparing prices: the narrow Westinghouse is WTM3100WL-X and the larger white right-hinge model is WTM4302WD-R, the LG is stainless GB-B400PS and the Haier is Satina HRF510FHS. A cheaper different hinge or finish may not be a useful alternative.
Add delivery, stairs or difficult access, old-fridge removal and any required door reversal to the comparison. Confirm that the delivery team can take the packed fridge through your route and what setup is included. Ask for the actual delivery date for your postcode.

Allow room to open the door and remove the drawers
Space for airflow and space to use the fridge serve different purposes. The Westinghouse example needs a much larger gap beside a corner wall than beside a cupboard that stops behind the door. Check that the door can open far enough to pull out drawers and remove shelves for cleaning.
For this Westinghouse model, the manual permits a smaller space above the hinge cover only with the cupboard airflow arrangement it illustrates. Follow that drawing and the levelling instructions before using a tighter opening.
The same fridge can need a different opening
Fisher & Paykel shows two cupboard layouts for the RF730QNUVX1. With the fridge doors standing in front of the cupboards, its illustrated opening is 945 mm wide. With the front of the fridge lined up with the cupboards, the opening for full door movement is 1,125 mm wide, 1,945 mm high and 778 mm deep.
Choose the drawing that matches your kitchen. Both layouts also need the ventilation path and room for the doors shown in the guide. Do not use the smaller opening dimensions for a different cupboard arrangement.
The depth figures in the table with a door open run from the back of the fridge to the open door. They are total depths, not extra space to add to the closed fridge. Rear clearances and room for a person to stand still need to be checked.

Measure the cavity, not the old refrigerator
An existing fridge may be narrower than the opening, pushed forward by a power point or sitting on an uneven floor. Measuring only the old appliance carries those unknowns into the next purchase.
- Remove loose items that prevent access to the sides and rear where practical.
- Measure the finished opening at several positions.
- Record skirting, trim, overhead cupboards and power point projections.
- Check whether the floor changes level or surface inside the opening.
- Photograph the cavity, connections and surrounding walls for reference in store.
Door swing needs more room than the closed appliance
A refrigerator can fit neatly when closed and still be frustrating every day. Mark the door and drawer paths on the floor with removable tape. Include the island, pantry door, wall return and the person standing in front of the appliance.
Check the opening angle needed to remove crisper drawers and shelves. A wall close to the hinge can stop the door before the internal fittings clear, even if the main food compartment remains accessible.
Plan power, water and ventilation before delivery
Keep the power point and plug accessible in the position allowed by the manufacturer. If the model has a plumbed water dispenser or automatic ice maker, check the water connection it requires. Follow the product instructions and local installation requirements. Do not trap a hose behind the cabinet or use the appliance to force a plug into a shallow recess.
Ventilation gaps must remain open. Filling them with trim, baskets or stored trays may affect performance and service access. Follow the exact guide supplied with the model rather than copying the gaps from another refrigerator.
Use the Energy Rating Label after capacity and fit
The Australian Government's fridge and freezer guidance recommends choosing the required size first. Every extra litre adds cooled space, so a larger appliance can cost more to run even when its star rating looks strong.
Compare annual kilowatt hours between models with similar capacity and features. The star rating measures efficiency relative to comparable appliances, while the annual energy figure helps estimate running cost using the tariff on your electricity bill.
Delivery access can decide the purchase
Measure the narrowest doorway and the tightest turn, not only the front door. Check steps, lift dimensions, handrails, gates, ceiling height at stairs and the path around kitchen islands. Confirm whether the delivery provider can remove doors or packaging and what happens if the appliance cannot be brought inside.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions and the agreed delivery service for final installation and settling. Ask how long the refrigerator must stand before it is switched on if it has been transported at an angle.
A practical fridge measurement checklist

- Test the hinge side and drawer path against walls and islands.
- Confirm power and any water connection required by your model.

What are standard fridge dimensions in Australia?
There is no single size that guarantees fit. For example, the LG GB-B400PS body is 697mm wide, 1740mm high and 696mm deep; the Westinghouse WTM4302WD-R is 699mm wide, 1725mm high and 723mm deep. Their required side gaps differ: 4mm each for this LG and 30mm each in the Westinghouse drawing. Check rear and top clearance, doors and delivery access separately.
How much space should be left around a fridge?
There is no useful allowance that applies to every model. Side, rear and overhead clearances vary with the appliance and installation. Follow the selected model's installation guide and keep its ventilation path open.
Should refrigerator depth include the doors and handles?
