Start with the floors and the job

A light vacuum for crumbs and hard floors is a different purchase from a machine expected to clean a carpeted family home. Write down the surfaces, stairs, pet hair and furniture that make up the normal cleaning route. Then decide whether the stick vacuum will be the main machine or a convenient second vacuum.

Compare normal or automatic mode with the main floor head attached. Also check charging time, battery warranty, replacement availability and replacement cost. A usable replacement battery can matter more after several years than another cleaning mode on day one.

Weight on the specification sheet is only part of the feel

Two vacuums with similar total weight can feel different because the motor, bin and battery sit in different positions. A machine with more weight near the handle can become tiring on stairs, above shoulder height or during a long carpet clean. A telescopic tube may help a shorter user, while a fixed tube may feel awkward even when the machine itself is light.

If possible, hold the complete vacuum with its powered head attached. Turn it around a chair, lift it onto a stair and try the control that changes power. The most useful showroom test is not a straight line across an empty floor.

Do not convert air watts, input watts or pressure figures into one another without a published method: they describe different quantities. Auto empty docks trade dust handling for floor space

Some charging stations empty the small vacuum bin into a larger bag. This can be helpful in a home that vacuums often or wants less loose dust during emptying. It does not remove maintenance. The bag, filters, seals and vacuum bin still need attention.

Measure the dock at its widest and deepest points, including the space needed to remove a bag or open a cover. Check the cost and availability of genuine bags before buying. A dock that blocks a hallway or becomes difficult to service will quickly feel less convenient.

Check every item that needs replacing or washing

• Replacement battery and its warranty.
• Dock bags and how often the manufacturer expects them to be changed.
• Washable filters and the drying time before refitting.
