Mattress Sizes Australia: Room, Base and Buying Guide

A larger mattress changes more than the sleeping surface. It changes the bed frame footprint, the space beside the bed, the cost of sheets and protectors, and whether the mattress can turn through the hallway. Mattress height can also make an existing bedside table or fitted sheet unsuitable.

Start with the room and base, then compare comfort and construction. Australian Home Collective has not slept on or tested mattresses for this guide, so it does not rank brands or promise that one construction will feel comfortable for every person.

Australian size labels use manufacturer-specific dimensions

Names such as single, queen and king are familiar market labels, not one legally universal set of dimensions. The Sealy Australia mattress-size guide and SleepMaker Australia mattress-size guide publish different dimensions for several labels. Sealy also states a manufacturing tolerance of plus or minus 15 mm for its handmade mattresses, while SleepMaker says its mattresses may vary 1–2 cm from its indicative guide. These are manufacturer statements about their own products, not a national legal standard.

Measure the bed frame, not only the mattress

A frame with rails, upholstery or a broad bedhead can be wider and longer than its mattress. Record the maximum outside dimensions. Mark that rectangle on the floor and include the depth of any leaning bedhead or drawers that extend from the sides.

Open the bedroom door, wardrobe and bedside drawers. Walk the route used at night and when making the bed. If the room needs a cot, mobility aid, laundry basket or access from both sides, include it in the test rather than treating empty floor as spare space.

Treat firmness labels as maker-specific descriptions

Do not assume that medium or a number out of ten is directly comparable across brands unless both publish a common method. Ask each maker how its label is defined within that range and test the exact mattress on the permitted base where possible.

Try the normal sleeping position for more than a few minutes where possible. For a mattress bought online, read the complete trial conditions before opening the package and keep the mattress protected as required. A trial is valuable only when the household can comply with its minimum period, pickup area and return process.

The base can change support and warranty eligibility

Check whether the manufacturer permits solid platforms, slats or adjustable bases. The SleepMaker after-purchase guidance specifies slats no more than 8 cm apart and a centre support rail for its mattresses, and warns that an unsuitable base may affect the mattress and warranty. That measurement is SleepMaker's instruction, not a universal rule; use the requirements for the exact mattress.

Measure the internal frame rather than relying on its size label. Check whether edge rails sit above the support surface and whether the mattress can expand without being pinched. A heavy hybrid also needs a frame and floor suited to its total loaded weight.

Mattress height changes the complete bed

Add mattress height to the top of the base. Sit on the resulting height and check whether both feet reach the floor comfortably and whether the bedside surface remains reachable.

Deep mattresses need fitted sheets and protectors with enough pocket depth. Allow extra fabric for toppers. Check that bedding will not pull tight at the corners or slip off when an adjustable base moves.

Delivery involves weight, turns and expansion space

A mattress delivered in a box still has weight and a large final size. Check the box dimensions, stair turns, lift limits and who will move it into position. Unroll it on the intended base if the instructions allow, because a fully expanded king mattress is much harder to turn in a small room.

Read the opening window, expansion guidance and advice about sleeping on it. Keep children and pets clear while packaging releases. Arrange old mattress removal before delivery where the home cannot safely store both.

Look beyond comfort on the first night

A short showroom trial cannot show how a mattress will retain its shape. Look for clearly described independent durability testing where it is available, then read the warranty's indentation limits, support requirements and care instructions.

• Confirm whether the cover can be removed or only spot cleaned.
• Ask how firmness parts, covers and other components are replaced.
• Check whether durability evidence describes the method and length of testing.
